Shalelu sat at the fire staring at its vibrant colours. The last few weeks had been harrowing to say the least. The flight from Kalsgard, the arena battle and the shock news that Theibar had died during the fellowship’s search for Suishen had caused her to re-evaluate her place in the world. A sudden movement made her start and she looked up. Her sister had appeared from the darkness and was sitting next to her. Shalelu had noticed a subdued air to her sister since the battle. None of the others would notice but some of the irreverence that had marked her character was gone, replaced with a stoicism that did not sit well on the porcelain skinned elf.
“I need your help” Luthien whispered quietly. She handed Shalelu a piece of paper with some obscure ingredients written in small neat handwriting. “I need to find these in the woods, and I don’t know how.”
Shalelu looked at her normally nature hating sister to see if this was some sort of joke set up by Athebryn.
“Please don’t ask, just help” pleaded Luthien. The look on her face told Shalelu that this was really important to Luthien.
“ Ok, Luthien we will leave at dawn”. The lack of argument about the early departure from Luthien added to her belief that this was important to her.
The next morning, Luthien was waiting for her sister at the fire. She looked like she had been there for some time, further evidence of a change in behaviour. Shalelu had expected to have plenty of time for breakfast and a warm mug of coffee. Luthien handed Shay a mug and a hot bread roll.
“It’s ok, I bought it, no interesting gnomish properties” she said
They sat in silence while they ate and headed off into nature.
The two sisters spent the day searching for the ingredients on the list. Shay kept her word and did not ask what the ingredients were for. Luthien relaxed during the day and gained a little of her old self back. They finally found everything on the list and headed back to camp. Just before they got back, Luthien grabbed her sister’s arm and called them to a stop.
“You nearly died in that weregild. Please don’t do that again. ” Luthien stammered. “ Thankyou for helping today, I’ll see you back at the caravan.” Then she quickly turned and disappeared into the forest.
Shalelu watched during the night for Luthien but she didn’t appear. The next morning there was a silk wrapped package next to her bed. She looked around the caravan and saw a similarly wrapped package next to Ameiko’s bed. She slowly picked up the package and saw some familiar items. There was two Cheya dumplings and 2 waybread along with a note.
I pledge my life to protecting Ameiko from the Storm Generals. I can’t do that without you. I would be lost if you died.
