The companion’s exhibition match was slated to be one of the most challenging and exciting of the whole competition. The rumour was that they would face a demon.
“That is kind of amusing” thought Shalelu “We travelled across the world from Crying Leaf and Luthien is still fighting demons”
Shalelu, Matsuro, Ameiko and Sandru walked to the arena with the throngs of other competitors and spectators. They took their seats on a bench in the front row. The crowd started to cheer as the Oni woman carried a heavy sack into the arena and threw it down in front of the fellowship. A large headless demon with a fiery face in its stomach faced their friends, looking longingly at their heads. The atmosphere hushed as the rumors became truth, they really were fighting a demon.
The demon released what looked, and smelt like a cloud kill. Ameiko and Shalelu glanced at each other. The fellowship did not defend well against magic users, and a demon was the ultimate magic user. Shalelu’s anxiety level rose when she saw first Theibar and then Luthien double over choking in the noxious gas. The cloud passed across the companions and the fight began in earnest.
A sharp movement to her right drew Shalelu’s attention. She turned towards it. Matsuro was sitting on the very edge of his seat, watching the match with a worried look on his face. He held something between his hands that she couldn’t quite see. The object looked strangely familiar but she just couldn’t place it. She turned back to watch the match.
Theibar and Luthien had moved into a flanking position. Shalelu expected that and realised that in the match tomorrow their only chance to avoid the blending, they had to block the flanking. The Demon swung the wicked looking axe, at Theibar. It was a good hit and Theibar recoiled from the impact. The gnomes were getting ready to act, and Theibar and Luthien dropped into fighting stance. The demon however, had not yet finished. The axe in his other hand swung and hit Luthien. It was a mighty blow and the blood could be seen seeping through Luthien’s brightly coloured scarves. She had taken a knee and was breathing heavily.
Matsuro leapt to his feet. Shalelu grabbed his arm fearing that he would do something stupid. The object fell from Matsuro’s hand and fluttered to the floor. Shalelu then realised what it was. It was Luthien’s favourite scarf. She had had the scarf since Crying Leaf and had learned many of her tricks with it. He snatched the scarf up away from Shalelu’s eyes. He moved to leave the arena.
Meanwhile the fight had ended. Theibar and Luthien were bleeding heavily. Jinko and Athebryn were coughing violently, the cloud having affecting them badly. Ameiko, Shalelu and Sandru walked to meet the combatants. By the time they got through the throng of wellwishers and fans, Luthien had left the arena and Jinko, Athebryn and Theibar were seen in the distance heading back to their rooms. From a distance Shalelu, spied a brightly coloured blur moving quickly towards a tall man. They embraced and moved away together. Shalelu realised at that moment that she had not needed to threaten Matsuro by the river, he really did care for Luthien. Shalelu smiled and stared back to her room to prepare for tomorrows battles.
